Product Information
While other planters crack, fade, and end up in landfill, our corten steel planter quietly develops a stunning amber patina — zero paint, zero maintenance. Built for your garden. Built for a lifetime.
Corten steel planter is an outdoor container made from weathering steel (ASTM A588 / Corten-B grade). Unlike ordinary steel, corten forms a tightly bonded iron-oxide patina when exposed to rain and air — a protective layer that prevents deeper corrosion and eliminates the need for any paint or sealant. The result is corten planter that lasts 20–50 years outdoors, develops a distinctive amber-to-deep-brown colour, and requires low maintenance, widely used in residential gardens, hotel terraces, and commercial landscape projects.
Not all rust is destruction. In Corten steel, rust is architecture — a self-forming shield that makes the metal stronger with every season.
Month 1 — Month 4
Warm Orange Tones
First bloom of patina emerges. Rust-tinted runoff occurs during this phase only.
Month 5 — Year 2
Rich Amber & Sienna
Oxide layer seals. Runoff stops completely. Colour deepens and stabilises.
After 2 Years
Deep Chocolate Brown
Fully mature patina. Self-protecting. No maintenance required
Corten patina is chemically bonded to the base metal - unlike ordinary rust which flakes. This layer regenerates even if scratched, providing permanent corrosion protection without any external coating.
Iron ions released into soil are a micronutrient, not a toxin.Corten steel planters pose zero risk to vegetable crops, herbs, or ornamental plants at any growth stage.
Originally engineered for railway infrastructure and bridges, ASTM A588 weathering steel maintains structural integrity from −40 °C Arctic winters to 50 °C desert summers. Wind, frost, UV - it handles all of it.
No paint. No galvanising. No zinc coating. Just pure steel — which means our planters are 100% recyclable at end of life, with zero chemical waste entering the environment.
Pre-Rust Planter Option
Originally engineered for railway infrastructure and bridges, ASTM A588 weathering steel maintains structural integrity from −40 °C Arctic winters to 50 °C desert summers. Wind, frost, UV - it handles all of it.
Custom Sizes · Laser-Cut Patterns
Standard rectangular, square, trough, and corner profiles are available. We HNJBL offer customised dimensions or a branded laser-cut design. We handle commercial custom orders from 10 units upward.
Drainage Design
Multiple drainage holes are provided at the bottom, and the planter can be equipped with a drainage tray and filter mesh to ensure rapid drainage and protect plant root health. An optional waterproof liner (plastic or rubber) can be installed inside and sealed to prevent corrosion caused by prolonged water accumulation.
Will corten steel planters stain my patio or decking?
During the initial 3–6 month weathering phase, light rust-coloured runoff can occur — this is normal and temporary. We strongly recommend either choosing our pre-rust planter, which reduces runoff by over 90%, or using a rubber drip tray underneath until the patina fully stabilises. Once sealed, no further staining occurs. Avoid placing new, untreated planters directly on white marble or light limestone without a tray.
Are corten steel planters safe for growing vegetables and plants?
Yes – completely safe. Corten steel releases only trace amounts of iron ions into the surrounding soil. Iron is an essential micronutrient for plant health, and the quantities released are far below any level associated with toxicity in plants or humans. In fact, iron-loving plants like blueberries, azaleas, and tomatoes often report improved health in corten-adjacent soil.
How long do corten steel planter pots actually last?
In standard outdoor conditions, our 3mm corten steel planters are designed to maintain structural integrity for 20–50+ years. The self-forming oxide layer renews itself automatically even if scratched or damaged. In comparison, mild steel planters typically rust through in 5–10 years; painted steel requires repainting every 3–5 years. Corten planters require low maintenance, only clean off any dust or dirt from the surface
